Expats: 10 WORST destinations to relocate in 2021 according to survey | Travel News | Travel

From work to family, marriage to new opportunities, Britons choose to relocate overseas for a number of reasons. The good news is, there are many countries offering opportunities that the UK does not. However, according to new research, there are 10 nations that rank “bottom” for expats.

As part of an annual expat survey, people from around the world who have relocated overseas answered some of the best and worst things about life abroad.

The Expat Insider survey from InterNations has revealed the 10 “best” and 10 “worst” nations for expats.

However, in 2021, the survey had a slightly different tone to years gone before due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result, many of the responses also contained elements impacted by COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions.

But which nations were ranked the 10 worst for expats in 2021?

Kuwait ranked the “worst” destination for expats in the survey for the seventh time in eight years.

According to InterNations the country also ranks last in the “Quality of Life Index” due to “poor responses” in the leisure options, personal happiness and travel and transport subcategories.

Data also shows Kuwait is the “wort expat destination” in terms of how easy it is to settle into life there.

Around 45 percent of expats said they found it “difficult to settle down in this country”.

However, experts from InterNations note that there were also “few surprises” in the bottom three countries listed.

Italy came in as the second-worst country for expats.

According to the respondents, the nation came in last for “career prospects and satisfaction”, with more than half of expats who took part rating their local career opportunities negatively.

Around 31 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with their job – globally this figure sits at 16 percent.

High-speed internet at home and job security were also raised as areas of concern from expats.

South Africa came in as the third “worst” destination for expats.

Approximately a third of those who took part in the survey said they did not consider their household income “enough to cover all their expenses”.

South Africa also ended up in the bottom 10 of the “Working Abroad” index and came in last for job security.

The research also found that expats living in Mediterranean destinations Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt, although satisfied with the ease of settling in, were less content with their “working life and financial aspects”.
