Heathrow and Gatwick: Turkey ‘to come off red list’ next week as cases drop

Suggestions that Turkey could be moved off the red travel list have invigorated tourist hopes of a getaway in the sun.

Moving Turkey to the amber list will allow fully vaccinated and under 18 Britons to travel to the popular holiday destination without needing to quarantine.

Before the pandemic, it is estimated that 2.3 million British tourists visited the hotspot each year.

According to The Times, pressure is mounting on the government to remove the country from the red list in its next review of the traffic light system.

Paul Charles, founder of the PC Agency travel consultancy, told The Times: “Turkey very much deserves to be on the amber list as it has some of the best Covid safety policies in place, especially in hotels and other tourist areas and has worked hard to reduce its infection rates.

“Many agree it feels safer there than it does in the UK.”

NHS track and trace figures show only 1.7 per cent of people touching down on flights from Turkey test positive for Covid in the past three weeks.

With other holiday destinations such as Spain being placed on the amber list and dropping cases in Turkey, travel companies might get their way.

No decision has yet been made about Turkey’s travel restrictions and so visitors who opt to go while the country is still on the red list will have to pay £2,285 per person for a 10-day stay in quarantine hotel on their return.
