Hundreds of thousands of British holidaymakers have had their plans thrown into chaos after ministers announced that quarantine rules will remain in place for all non-essential travel from France.

From Monday, fully vaccinated travellers were due to be exempt from quarantine rules for all amber-list countries, which includes France. However, barely 48 hours before the policy was due to take effect, the government announced that it would not apply to France because of concerns about the spread of the Beta variant, which was first identified in South Africa.

France will effectively be put in a new category in between the amber and red lists.
