Latest travel advice for holidays to France, Spain and Portugal from UK

While Covid restrictions have been lifted in England, there is still disruption to international travel, flights and holidays this summer.

From Monday, July 19, UK residents arriving from amber list countries who are fully vaccinated no longer have to quarantine.

But the Government has now said this will not apply to France following the persistent presence of cases in the country of the Beta variant, which was first identified in South Africa.

Anyone who has been in France in the last 10 days will need to quarantine on arrival to England in their own accommodation and will need a day two and day eight test – regardless of their vaccination status.

This includes any fully vaccinated individual who travels through France from either a green or another amber country to reach England, the Government said.

The Test to Release scheme remains an option for travellers to shorten their quarantine period should they test negative after day five, a statement said.

Here’s the latest from the government on travel to three popular European destinations:

France

France is on the amber list for entering England. From, July 19 anyone arriving from France to England must continue to quarantine for 10 days at home or in other accommodation, even if they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

From June 20, there is no curfew in place and there are no internal travel restrictions in France.

Face masks remain obligatory in all public indoor areas. From July 21, you will need to demonstrate your COVID-19 status (vaccination status, negative test or proof of recent recovery) to access events/spaces with over 50 people attending.

From August this will apply to a wider group of leisure activities as well as some public transport.

Portugal

Portugal, including the Azores, is on the amber list for entering England while Madeira is on the green list for entering England.

Travellers from the UK who have not been fully vaccinated must quarantine for 14 days on arrival in mainland Portugal.

Regarding the distribution of Covid cases, 1,307 were registered in the North region; 1,279 in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region; 259 in the Algarve, 247 in the Center and 117 in the Alentejo, local news in Portugal has reported.

Spain

Spain, including the Canary Islands, is on the amber list for entering England. The Balearic Islands were on the green list for entering England.

But from 4am on Monday July 19 the Balearic Islands moved to the amber list for entering England.

While the nationwide State of Emergency declared by the Spanish government on October 25 2020 ended on May 9 2021, some restrictions and curfews remain in force and may vary between regions.
