Summer holidays look set to be allowed to go ahead to specific countries in the latest relaxation of the coronavirus lockdown.
Ministers have confirmed the requirement to self-isolate for 14 days upon returning to the UK will be scrapped for some popular destinations.
It means trips to France, Greece and Spain look on the cards after the Government confirmed on Friday night that it will revise the quarantine measures at a review on Monday. You can read the full story here.
It is the latest step in the easing of the lockdown imposed on March 23 to tackle the spread of Covid-19 – although Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that restrictions could be put back if people continue to “take liberties”.
He said: “If you look at what’s happening elsewhere in the world where people have been coming out of lockdown, I’m afraid what you’re also seeing is people taking too many liberties with the guidance, mingling too much, not observing social distancing.”
Downing Street warned that local lockdowns will be imposed if case numbers rise, which could include closing beaches in warm weather.
On Friday night, huge crowds gathered in Liverpool city centre to celebrate the club winning the Premier League. A dispersal order was put in place to try and break up the large gathering. Police said the actions of the group “heightened the risk of spreading Covid-19”.
It was confirmed on Friday that 43,414 people in the UK have now died in in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus – an increase of 186 from the day before.
The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have passed 54,000.
