New rules to follow for going on a weekend away


Spontaneous jaunts are a thing of the past: these days, a weekend away requires plenty of forward planning in order to avoid disappointment and protect yourself and others from Covid-19.

Here are the new rules:

1. Check the current restrictions

Wherever you’re planning to go, check the current government advice on what you can and cannot do when it comes to travel, and check whether there are any tighter restrictions for the place you want to visit.

2. Rethink your mode of travel

The government advises walking or cycling where possible and avoiding public transport if you can – but unless your trip is very local, walking and cycling probably won’t be an option.

Travelling by car is probably your safest option, but if you do have to use public transport, the government has issued some specific advice on steps you can take to keep yourself and other safe. These include wearing face coverings, sanitising your hands regularly and avoiding touching surfaces.

It’s also advisable to travel at off-peak times, use contactless payment and minimise your luggage.

3. Think twice about where and when to visit

With travel restrictions set to provide a huge boost to domestic tourism, it’s worth giving

some serious thought to your choice of destination and the timing of your visit.

Do you really want to head in the same direction as everyone else on a bank holiday Friday? Or is there somewhere less obvious you can visit that won’t have you sitting on the motorway for hours?

With many popular hotspots overbooked, this is a great time to think outside the box and try some new destinations. Visiting less crowded places also makes you less likely to

come into contact with anyone who has the coronavirus.

4. Book, book, book

Get your accommodation booked well in advance, and also consider booking yourself into

the bars, restaurants and attractions you want to visit. Many people have been

disappointed after turning up in a destination only to find they can’t get into the places they wanted to enjoy – so get it booked.

5. Check cancellation and refund options

While booking is wise, we don’t know what’s around the corner, so check the cancellation

policy on any booking, and find out if deposits or up-front payments can be refunded. While we all hope vaccinations will get us back to normality, a third wave of Covid-19 is very possible, so be prepared to have to change your plans at short notice.

6. Pack your Covid accessories

A mask is essential of course, and it’s also important to take along an antibacterial spray or gel so that you can regularly sanitise your hands. Consider taking spares too.

It’s also a good idea to download the NHS track and trace app and to make sure you have a QR reader on your phone so you can easily access venues’ own track and trace and ordering web pages.
